Domains Are A Great Internet Investment

I've been saying it for a few years now - domains are like Real Estate - they are a surefire long term investment in my opinion. I was kicking around a few different sites this morning and noticed a few things. I've never sold a domain but think I am ready to let go of a few I own. I'm looking at auction sites (average 20% commission) and flat out "buy it now" pricing. I'm also on a couple of lists that send me offers of recently expired domains and flat rate pricing. Verisign just released their latest report (get report) Among it's findings: 33% of domains don't resolve to a multipage website! That means fully one third of registered domains don't have any web pages at all or are parked. Out of all the parked ones you better believe a whole bunch of them are for sale. The biggest issue on the web today in my opinion. The jist here is that by inferring that websites that
allow people to share copyrighted material could be terrorists, the Feds can now just call your web host
and put up their own page. That is crazy. Rule of law anyone?

I guess you could consider this Grey Hat Marketing. That is, this guy reaped an unintentional benefit unintentionally. This article briefly illuminates a Google weakness that was exploited by an a-hole merchant. Back-links from relevant content. Only the relevant content was a bunch of folks complaining about said a-hole. The article links to another about the actual merchant and how he took advantage of his unpopularity by being even more unpopular. Pretty amazing stuff. The insight gained on Google's 'mindset' is priceless.

Net Neutrality is extremely important to all business owners. If the wireless carriers can get their way, connecting to the web through them would allow them to block any websites the want to really. Verizon could keep you from using skype on your mobile phone, Sprint could block access to Google searching and only allow Bing to work on your Sprint phone. This would be horrible for end users of these devices. Why is it such a big deal? Worldwide more people will connect to the Internet using cellphone signals and wide area WIFI than will use a wired connection next year for the first time.

Networks like FB are not going away and we are now learning about 'Socialnomics' and mobile advertising and how it will all change even more very rapidly. Especially if we lose net neutrality.
